OOC: Nanite Project Reference Guide

sixthdeadliestThis explanation contains SPOILERS for the series Generator Rex. This is just a handy reference guide for anyone who wants to know what the big deal about nanites in Six's world. Any suggestions for how to better improve it are welcomed.

What is Commonly Known
Five years before the current time, a group of scientists came together to work on nanomachines called "nanites" with the intent to cure disease in what is referred to as "The Nanite Project". A very noble goal by anyone's standards.
Unfortunately, there was an accident. The research lab in Abysus was mostly destroyed due to a massive explosion. This explosion, commonly known as "The Nanite Event", became the most significant disaster in human history. The nanites--their programming still unfinished--were released and spread across the world, infecting every living thing on Earth: every human, every animal, and every plant. Due to their unfinished programming, the nanites started mutating whatever they infected. A tiny minority of humans who were changed managed to keep their minds and some measure of control over themselves, but for the most part the changed became rampaging mutating monsters that would later become known as "EVOs" (short for "Exponentially Variegated Organisms").
Most of the time, the nanites in a person's body are dormant. That person can go about his or her life for years without any issues from them. However, should those nanites ever activate, the mutation will occur. What exactly triggers nanite activation is unknown. One person might transform in the middle of a high-stress situation. Another might be in the middle of book while relaxing.
Kiev in the Ukraine was the hardest hit due to the Earth's magnetic field concentrating so many nanites there. Almost every living thing went EVO. In response to widespread panic, all unchanged citizens were evacuated and a spherical force field was put in place around the city to hold the EVOs in, all access to it banned. This became later known as "The Bug Jar".
Several containment groups were founded around the world, the largest of which being Providence. Providence started out containing or killing EVOs. However, it gained more prominence due to researching a permanent cure for EVOs. The "kill" option became the last resort should cure (using an amnesiac boy who could deactivate nanites named "Rex") or contain fail.
The Truth Behind the Truth (SPOILERS)
The Nanite Project was funded by a consortium of super-wealthy businessmen who wanted to live forever. The nanites would cure disease and reverse damage, but the original intent was to extend their lives indefinitely.
There was an accident at the lab one day involving the head researchers' son Rex Salazar. To save his life, they used a finished prototype batch of nanites to repair the damage. The procedure was a success, but it came with strange side effects: Rex was mutated so that he could talk to machines and even build them out of his own body.
This mutation pushed the consortium to encourage their scientists to see what the limits of the technology actually were. This led to the accidental discovery of what became known as the Dominion or "God" Code which a user could use to control the very fabric of the universe. This code was divided into five Meta-Nanites, each possessing their own specialized control over the code: gravity, matter and energy, time and space, elemental forces, and mechanics.
However, Violetta and Raphael Salazar along with a few other researchers (including their elder son Caesar) saw the danger in these Meta-Nanites. They then put into place a fail safe where the nanites could only be properly controlled by one user: their younger son Rex. They also triggered the explosion which caused the Nanite Event to scatter the Metas, but things didn't go as planned when a reproduction cycle was triggered right before the explosion. Most of the scientists would survive the explosion, but Violetta and Raphael were killed when they were betrayed and locked in the reactor by fellow researcher Van Kleiss.
The existence of the Metas and the Dominion Code is largely a modern legend to most people. Very few are privy to the knowledge that this myth is anything but.
Providence itself was established and controlled from behind the scenes by the very consortium that had ordered the Nanite Project in the first place, using the global organization to try and locate the Metas. White Knight as the public commander of Providence was one of the people aware of this fact, actually managing to obtain one of them but locking it down with biofeed security rather than using it himself, seeing the Meta as too dangerous to be used. It is assumed that Six--as White Knight's second-in-command--was also aware of this knowledge prior to an experiment by Caesar to restore Rex's memories that erased six years' worth of Six's.
